From Ew to Blue: How to Clean a Swampy Pool
There is nothing less appealing than swampy pool water. Keeping up with the hectic pace of your daily life can lead to a certain amount of neglect when it comes to pool maintenance. The process of cleaning a dirty pool can be time consuming, but luckily there are a few tricks you can do to cut your cleaning time in half. Here are some simple steps to help you turn your pool from ew to blue.
- Make sure the bottom of your pool is free of debris by using a large leaf net or a skimmer to clean it. Also, make sure that you do not use a pool vacuum if you are unable to see the bottom of your pool.
- Take proper measures to ensure that your pools pH and alkalinity levels are within the normal ranges. You can use products such as pH Plus, pH Minus and Alkalinity Plus. If you fail to properly bring both levels into the normal ranges, your pool’s water will never clear.
- Your next step is to shock your pool. The objective is to super chlorinate the water to effectively kill any bacteria or algae that may be growing in your pool. Keep in mind that it may take several gallons of chlorine before you will start to see results. You can begin with 3 to 4 gallons (or more) and if you do not see results within 24 hours, repeat the process.
- Next, run your filter for 24 hours a day and plan on a backwash 3-4 times a day. The reason for this is because dirty pool water tends to clog your pool filter. The extra backwashes every few hours will ensure that the water is being filtered properly.
- Lastly, once the water is clear you may be able to see even more debris on the bottom of your pool. You can try using a pool vacuum to clear the debris if it is minimal, if not, you may want to consider having your pool professionally power vacuumed, which will save your pool pipes in the long run.
